    Summertime is here!
Following a successful return to the concert platform in April this year, Yorkshire Wind Orchestra are taking to the stage once again and are delighted to present a special concert in July. Summertime will  provide audiences with an evening of summer themed music and popular classics at Stephen Hill Methodist Church in Sheffield.

Yorkshire Wind Orchestra is well known for its longstanding tradition of supporting other charities, and this performance is no exception. This concert is in aid of local charity Sheffield Young Carers, who offer support to children and young people in Sheffield who are young carers or are affected by drug and alcohol issues in their family.

Yorkshire Wind Orchestra Chairman, Emma Cordell said: “Whilst Yorkshire Wind Orchestra exists to provide high-quality music making opportunities for its members and fabulous entertainment for our audiences, we take pride in supporting other local charities across the region too. It is wonderful to be returning to Sheffield and we are delighted to be supporting a charity which provides such important support to the local communities.”

The concert will feature a range of well-known and much-loved music, including Summertime (from Porgy and Bess) by George Gershwin, a fun arrangement of Country Gardens by Percy Grainger and Four Dances from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein, as well as compositions by the ensembles Musical Director and Conductor, Keiron Anderson.

Join the orchestra on Saturday 16 July 2022, 7:30pm at Stephen Hill Methodist Church, Sheffield.

Tickets are just £6, available through our website HERE or on the door.

As we're still unable to play together, we're taking our summer concert online.

The virtual concert video will launch on Saturday 4 July at 19:30 on both Facebook and YouTube. If you're not able to tune in then, the video will remain available in both locations.

Sit back and enjoy a short, light-hearted virtual concert created entirely by members of the orchestra who’ve been working on their recording and editing skills.

Brought to you from homes and gardens across Yorkshire, we present a number of small ensembles formed from within the orchestra.

  • Fundraising target met!

We are delighted to have met our target and raised £625 - so far - for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity

This money has been raised thanks to the generosity of our supporters who have listened to new version of Happy Birthday and donated to our chosen cause and of all those involved in the production of the video who have given considerable time and talent to the project.

It's not too late to contribute. Donations can still be made via Virgin MoneyGiving.

Happy Birthday celebrates the orchestra's 25th anniversary and was arranged by Keiron Anderson, played and recorded by members of Yorkshire Wind Orchestra during the current lockdown, and edited by Ricardo Lacombe

If you've wondered how we went about producing our new arrangement of Happy Birthday from persuading 39 people to record themselves to bringing together the home recordings into a high-quality final video, let us tell you about it!

The Yorkshire Wind Orchestra 25th anniversary concert was scheduled for 16 May and we were very disappointed to have to postpone it.

Our committee discussed how to mark the occasion anyway and thought it would be fitting to make a lockdown recording of Happy Birthday. There are several arrangements of Happy Birthday available for concert band but we wanted something that better reflected YWO's personality and style so we asked our MD, Keiron Anderson, to write an arrangement for us.

Over a couple of weeks, members of the wind orchestra recorded their individual parts ready to be combined into a final video. However, we hit a snag when we remembered that our timpani were locked away in our rehearsal venue. A cheeky email later and Mark Wagstaff, percussionist with Opera North, agreed to record the timp part for us.

Once the final video has been edited and mixed - by Ricardo Lacombe - we'll make it available on social media and on our website in support of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity. A pdf version of the arrangement will also be available.
