Finale Symphony No. 3 ("Organ")

Score and parts by Saint-Saens, arr. Howard Lorriman (2002)

This well-known last movement of Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 is of considerable variety. The lowest pedal notes played on the organ, are of almost inaudibly low frequency. When experienced live in a concert hall equipped with a large concert organ with 32-foot pedal stops, these notes are very dramatic, and a deeply impressive audio experience.

Three American Icons

French Suite for Winds

Full score and parts by Judith Bingham (1997)

This suite is all about the Kennedy assassination theories and evokes the popular music of the late 50's and early 60's (Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Big Bands, cult TV, jazz combos, etc).

Each main movement takes a snapshot of each icon and expands that split second into a formal musical shape. The suite is made up of:

Heathcote's Inferno

for Symphonic Wind Orchestra

Parts by Roger Marsh (1996)

A powerful and imaginative passacaglia drawn from Marsh's orchestrations of Dante's Inferno. From a somber opening, the piece develops into a thrilling, full-blown waltz finale strongly suggestive of Ravel.

Heathcote's Inferno was commissioned by the Royal Northern College of Music in 1996.

Sailing with Archangels

Parts by Geoffrey Poole (1990)

The theme here is the relation of man and the sea. The title is meant to invoke the square-sail ships of old with their fantastic angel prows; and the music traces one voyage in particular, when Vasco de Gama (in 1497-9) opened up a major era of sea commerce with the East.
